Your face puts that hardware to unusually good use. Hands and feet mostly carry contact scent, whatever you’ve recently touched or walked through. What a Dog Actually Detects on Your Face

Affection isn’t absent from this behavior. It’s just secondary.
Once a dog has gathered the information it wants, sniffing often shifts into something closer to a greeting ritual. A dog that lingers near your face after the initial investigation, softening its body and slowing its breathing, has usually moved from data collection into simple closeness.
This is also where a familiar habit tends to show up. A dog that presses its nose gently against your cheek or jaw, rather than sniffing rapidly, is often doing something closer to booping you with its nose, a light contact gesture that reads more like a check-in than an investigation.
The line between the two isn’t always clean. A dog might start sniffing out of pure curiosity and end the interaction nuzzled against your neck simply because it likes being close. Both things can be true in the same thirty seconds.
Reading the Behavior in the Moment It Happens

Right after you’ve been away, the sniffing tends to be fast, focused, almost businesslike, as your dog updates its picture of where you’ve been. Why This Behavior Rarely Means What Owners Assume
It’s easy to read a face sniff as a purely emotional gesture, especially right after a long day apart. But the biology points somewhere more practical.
Your dog’s nose is built to extract meaning from odor the way your eyes extract meaning from a facial expression. Sniffing your face is closer to your dog reading a short, detailed update on your day than it is to a hug, and that doesn’t make it less meaningful. It just makes it a different kind of meaningful.
