In 2008, researchers at the University of London published a small but striking finding: dogs who watched a person yawn were significantly more likely to yawn themselves than dogs who watched that same person simply open their mouth.
It was the first documented evidence of contagious yawning crossing the species line between humans and dogs. That finding set off more than a decade of follow-up studies trying to figure out what, exactly, was going on in a dog’s brain when your yawn triggered theirs.
If you’ve ever caught your dog yawning back at you from across the couch on a lazy afternoon, you’ve witnessed this phenomenon firsthand. It feels almost conversational, like a small unspoken exchange. But what does the science actually say about it?
The Study That Started the Conversation
The original 2008 study, led by Ramiro Joly-Mascheroni and colleagues, tested 29 dogs and found that 21 of them yawned after watching a person yawn, compared to none during the control condition. That’s a striking effect size for a behavior most people assume is just reflexive.
Since then, other researchers have tried to replicate and extend the finding, with mixed but generally supportive results. A 2013 study out of Japan by Teresa Romero and colleagues went a step further, finding that dogs yawned more frequently in response to yawns from familiar people, like their owners, than from strangers.
That detail matters, because it hints that something more socially selective might be happening than a simple automatic reflex.
Scientists Think Empathy May Be Part of the Explanation
In humans, contagious yawning has long been linked to empathy and social bonding, and researchers studying dogs have wondered whether a similar mechanism is at play. The idea is that if a dog is more responsive to yawns from people they’re emotionally attached to, that selectivity might reflect some degree of emotional attunement rather than pure mimicry.
Some studies have supported this. Romero’s familiarity findings are often cited as evidence that dogs’ yawning contagion isn’t purely mechanical.
A 2012 study by Karine Silva and colleagues pushed the question further by testing sound alone: they played recordings of a human yawn with no visual cue at all, specifically to see whether contagion would hold up without social context.
It didn’t disappear. Dogs still yawned more at the sound of a familiar person’s yawn than a stranger’s, which added further support to the idea that something relationship-specific, not just mechanical mimicry, is driving the response.
It’s a compelling idea, especially for anyone who already suspects their dog reads them closely. Dogs are remarkably attuned to human faces and voices. That’s part of why they’ll sometimes go still and hold a fixed stare when they’re trying to work out what you want. Contagious yawning could plausibly fit into that same broader pattern of responsiveness to people.
Alternative Explanations Worth Taking Seriously
That said, empathy isn’t the only explanation on the table, and a good number of researchers remain unconvinced it’s even the leading one. Some studies have failed to replicate the contagious yawning effect altogether.
A 2009 study by Elizabeth Harr and colleagues, for example, found no evidence that dogs yawned more after watching humans yawn compared to a control gesture. Part of the disagreement seems to come down to methodology: studies have used different control conditions, different definitions of what counts as a “yawn” versus a stretch or a gape, and different familiarity levels between dogs and experimenters, all of which can shift the results. That inconsistency raised real questions about how robust the original finding actually was.
Other researchers have proposed more mundane explanations. Yawning could simply be a stress response, triggered by the mild social pressure of being watched or interacted with closely, rather than anything resembling emotional contagion. There’s also a possibility that some dogs are picking up on subtle physical cues, like a shift in posture or breathing, rather than genuinely “catching” the yawn the way people do with each other.
A few studies have suggested that a dog’s level of arousal also plays a role, meaning a relaxed, drowsy dog lounging next to you on the couch might simply be more prone to yawning in general, human trigger or not.
What Contagious Yawning Doesn’t Prove
It’s worth being careful here, because it’s easy to take a finding like this and run further with it than the data supports. A dog yawning after you doesn’t necessarily mean it’s feeling your emotions or reading your mental state the way another person might.
Empathy, in the psychological sense, is a fairly sophisticated thing: it means actually grasping what’s going on inside another creature, not just reacting to it. Yawn contagion alone isn’t strong enough evidence to say dogs are doing that. At most, researchers describe it as a possible marker of social sensitivity, not proof of full emotional understanding.
It’s also worth noting that individual dogs vary enormously. Some yawn back reliably, others rarely do it at all, and that variation alone should caution against sweeping claims. Reading too much into any single behavior is a common trap here: a dog that doesn’t yawn back at you isn’t necessarily less bonded to you, in the same way a dog that goes quiet the moment you walk in the door isn’t automatically anxious. One behavior rarely tells the whole story on its own.
Where the Research Stands Now
Contagious yawning in dogs sits in a genuinely interesting but unsettled corner of animal behavior science. The evidence leans toward it being a real phenomenon with at least some social component, but researchers haven’t converged on a single explanation, and probably won’t for a while.
If contagious yawning really does reflect some aspect of how dogs respond to the people closest to them, it could give researchers a simple way to study the social side of the human-dog relationship.
What’s clear is that dogs are paying closer attention to us than we sometimes give them credit for, whether that shows up as a yawn, a lingering look, or a sudden hush in the room. The rest is still being worked out, one study at a time.

A shared yawn is therefore more than an amusing coincidence. It offers a glimpse into the quiet ways social bonds are expressed through everyday moments of mutual awareness.
